The Raku Experience, Raku Glazing and Firing
Ceramic Arts Queensland
Kirstin Farr and team
09:00 - 13:00 $40 per pot

Our Raku equipment will be set up on the grass with bisque fired pots for sale to be glazed by the interested participants. We will explain the intricacies of the Raku technique and assist in glazing the pots.
The pots will then be placed in the kiln for firing the glazes. When the kiln reaches temperature, we tong them out and place them into a rubbish bin with paper and sawdust to be ‘smoked’ so the glazes can take in the smoke.
The naked clay with no glaze applied will turn black and the smoke will penetrate the crazes of the glaze and leave very interesting markings.
The Obvara technique is different as the pots are heated in the kiln without any glaze, and when hot, tonged out and placed in a yeast mixture. This mixture burns into the surface of the pots making interesting marks and smells like bread baking!
We will have a team of CAQ volunteers to man the glaze station and the kilns. We will explain what we do in as much detail as the participants would like.
