BVAC Open Weekend 2024
A Celebration of Art, Community, and Creativity
July 27–28, 2024
The Brisbane Visual Arts Community Open Weekend once again proved why it’s a highlight of the creative calendar. Over two packed days at the BVAC Hub in Tarragindi, our venue came alive with demonstrations, workshops, art displays, and community connection — all delivered by our dedicated member groups and passionate volunteers.

A Community Coming Together
This year’s Open Weekend was more than just an event — it was a genuine celebration of visual arts in Brisbane. With activities for all ages and a lot of them free, it was an inclusive and welcoming space where everyone could learn something new, have a go, or simply enjoy watching skilled artists in action.
A mix of demonstrations, drop-in activities, and paid workshops meant there was always something happening, whether you had 10 minutes or all afternoon. We are incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm and support of everyone who took part — from organisers to artists to our wonderful visitors.
Workshop Highlights: Creativity in Action
Our Open Weekend was brimming with hands-on workshops that inspired and delighted makers of all kinds.
The Queensland Bookbinders’ Guild led the way with their sell-out Secret Belgian Book Binding workshop. Attendees learned how to create a book that opens perfectly flat—an elegant and surprisingly sturdy structure loved by book artists and journallers alike.
Gill Scott guided participants through the playful art of Polymer Clay Buttons, showing just how creative and versatile a simple button can be.
Helen Medland’s Tallie Kumihimo Necklace Making brought a beautiful Japanese braiding technique into the spotlight, with stunning wearable results.
Anna-Margot and Allie Collins took things up a notch with a vibrant session on Enamel Jewellery, offering participants the chance to try their hand at layering colour and glass on metal.
Julie-Ann Barker’s workshop on Acrylic Paint Backgrounds gave insight into layering, texture and techniques that can serve as the foundation for mixed media artworks.
Susan Hoy’s Slow Stitching session reminded us to take our time and enjoy the meditative rhythm of thread, encouraging mindfulness and creativity.
Finally, Paste Paper for Bookbinding with Sarah Davies and Kerrie White added a splash of colour to the weekend. Participants made decorative hand-painted papers ideal for binding, collage and craft—each one completely unique.
These workshops not only filled the rooms with creativity but gave our visitors the chance to learn from experienced artists and craftspeople from our own community.

Until Next Year…
BVAC Open Weekend 2024 was a joyful success — filled with learning, laughter, and shared creativity. Whether you came for the workshops, the demonstrations, the community, or simply to be inspired, we thank you for being part of it.
We look forward to welcoming you back in 2025 for even more art, activity, and community spirit at the BVAC Hub.
