BVAC Open Weekend 2025 – Saturday Recap

Creative sparks flew on day one at BVAC.

What a Saturday!
From the moment the doors opened at 9am, the BVAC Hub came alive with colour, conversation, and creative action. With a bustling crowd and perfect winter weather, Saturday’s Open Weekend lineup delivered hands-on experiences, inspiring demonstrations, and a real sense of community spirit.

Day One Highlights

The Raku Experience – Ceramic Arts QLD
Visitors were treated to a dramatic and smoky spectacle in the courtyard as Ceramic Arts QLD led a live Raku glazing and firing session. Watching the glowing kilns open and pieces emerge transformed was truly unforgettable. A steady stream of curious onlookers gathered throughout the morning, learning about this centuries-old process firsthand from the artists.

Gel Printing with ATASDA
Inside, the studio buzzed with colour as ATASDA members shared their love of surface design through gel printing. Visitors watched the layering process of textures and colour unfold — and many left with ideas to try it themselves. A standout moment was seeing just how versatile and accessible gel printing can be, whether you're a textile artist or a total beginner.

Leather Travel Journal Workshop – Qld Bookbinders’ Guild
One of the most talked-about workshops was the leather travel journal session. Tutor Allie Collins guided participants through the traditional art of hand-binding journals. The results were stunning.

Introduction to Recycled Papermaking – Papermakers & Artists of Queensland
Led by Joanna Faber, this session was a beautiful blend of creativity and sustainability. Visitors got hands-on with the art of turning everyday paper scraps into stunning new sheets — textured, coloured, and full of character. It was an inspiring introduction to the papermaking process, and a timely reminder of the beauty we can create from the things we usually throw away. Eco-friendly, tactile, and endlessly creative!

What a start to the weekend
Saturday set a vibrant tone for the Open Weekend. With a full day of learning, laughter, and creative exchange, our community came together to celebrate the visual arts in all their forms. Huge thanks to all the groups, volunteers, and visitors who made it such a success.
